Nicholas chose to make a duck for his end of the year project in Kindergarten. They've been learning all about farms and even went on a field trip to Owen Farm. Nicholas was very excited about the trip and told me all about the different animals he saw. He was excited about the roosters because he saw the house that they live in.
We went to Michael's to buy clay because that's what Nicholas said he wanted to make it out of. He was also very specific about the kind of duck he wanted to make, a mallard with a green head, like we saw at White Park he told us. We also got some feathers and a wooden farm set to use in the box. He told us he wanted to put the duck in a box and he wanted two cuts and used his arm to make an "L" shape to show us how to cut the box. It was so funny. Nicholas and I worked on painting the wooden farm set first. He and Daddy worked on the duck next. Then they used a shoebox and painted the back blue for the sky and put a sun in it. They also painted a blue oval in the center to make it look like a pond. Then Nicholas did all the painting on the duck and Daddy helped him glue the feathers on. I think it turned out awesome!
On the night of the event at school Nicholas got very excited once in his classroom. Each of the kids were supposed to read their papers for the adults as they came to their stations. He was reading his paper very fast so we couldn't understand him. But he'd been reciting the facts to us for a week so we knew all of them! The facts he had in his report included 1) ducks have webbed feet and dive in the water, 2) ducks lay 9-14 eggs per clutch and 3) baby ducks bond with the first thing they see. He had done all the research, writing and drawing at school. I was so proud of him!
